Hitched with a Vow (aka "what's the difference between Personal & Legal Vows).

So, you're organising your wedding. It's getting close and you meet with Lovers Land Celebrant for a Planning Meeting. Aaaand....I ask you "do you want to say some Personal Vows as well as your Legal Vows?"

So, what's the diff?

Well, maybe you've been to a friend's wedding and you know that part where the couple made some cute, little promises to one another? Sprinkled with a few sweet and quirky funnies. Perhaps you even had a teeny giggle at some of the joke-y words they said to one another.

As the name suggests, these are the Personal Vows. And let's face it....it's what everyone wants to hear. They maketh your Day wholly and truly unique to you as a couple.

They're not long (it's not speech time). I encourage around 200 to 300 words max and I print your beautiful words of love onto nice parchment and place in my Vow Card holders. You will not need to memorise them or bring out a scrappy piece of scrawled notes. In the lead up to your wedding I can also send you examples of Personal Vows to help you in the creative process.

I am always just an email or text away from a lil bit of vow coaching and editorial. Then, after your wedding I will pop those gorge vow cards in with your Marriage Certificate for you to always look back on and remember that special moment.

Now, you do not have to say Personal Vows. If you're not a fan of public speaking, a little shy and just don't want to add to all the jingly-jangly nerves; these are not mandatory; just a bespoke element to personalise your ceremony.

Legal Vows are, again, as the name suggests .....full of legally binding words, taken from the Marriage Act 1961 (cth). They make up one very small part of your ceremony that actually makes you married.

And (you can see where I'm going with this!), you must say these exact words - these are not up for debate. As per your Personal Vows, you will not need to memorise these as I will be right there with you (quietly) getting you to repeat after me.

So, now you know. And hopefully feel more informed and comfortable with all your options.

PS. In my experience, often the most reluctant and hesitant couples end up creating the darndest near-perfect Personal Vows

PPS. In my experience, no couple has ever regretted saying their Personal Vows, but rather, thanking me endlessly for encouraging them to write them xx
